A driveway costs more than a stripped-down flatwork number because the ground here varies and, on the clay side, keeps moving: the base gets read and prepped per lot, a reinforcement grid goes in, joints are placed on purpose, and the cure has to survive the heat. As a rough opener, a standard residential drive tends to begin around $8 to $14 a square foot, rising for decorative finishes or a serious tear-out. Beyond that, the cost answers to the slab's size, a 4-inch versus 6-inch pour, the finish, and any removal of the old drive. We nail the figure down on a site walk, not over the phone.

Where the lot is clay-heavy we moisture-condition and compact so expansive soil cannot jack the slab up and drop it; where it is sandy we firm and confine the base so it cannot wash or slump. On top of that goes a reinforcement grid, a planned joint layout, and drainage kept off the edges. The ground moves; our job is to choose where that shows.
Most of the time it is the dirt below, not the concrete. On the clay side, a long drought shrinks the soil out from under whole sections and the next big rain swells it back, tilting a slab built without a real base. On the sandy side, poorly confined fill slumps and washes. A driveway laid on the wrong base for its soil fails either way, so we rebuild the base and steel to suit the lot.
